just about finished up the code for moving around the map while i was at work today..you can move between the first 3 boxes and the 4th box is partially implemented..so that’ll definatley be done by tomorrow
so I haven’t made many posts yet..we’ve had a few group meetings and started getting a lot of things starting to work. Last night I met with taegan for a couple hours..we worked a little on her code for the map and I helped her add some code to randomly place patches of grass. I also started working on the code to navigate the map, so then when you click on one of the 4 areas, your character moves to that area. here’s the swf of what we have for the map so far. I’ll be adding some more to it on wednesday before our next group meeting on thursday.
Robin (one of the ladies on the phone during my interview) called me back tonight.
The bad news is I won’t be working there this summer.
The good news is she wanted to let me know that they all really liked my demo reel and enjoyed talking with me on the phone. They felt I’d make a great shader or rigger, but don’t have any positions in either of those areas for me to fill. She was sorry they couldn’t hire me, but said I’d be on file with them and that she was looking forward to hearing from me again in the future.
so for this excercise I tried playing with chroma-keying. my source video for exercise 2 was an old westinghouse video, and many of the title-type screens during the video had a black background. I modified my exercise 2 with some switches to allow the video to pass through without having the alpha channels modified, and also made a button for 5 different graphics which can be overlayed on top of the video by clicking their name.

so..when doing the first excercise, I found that if you try and put too big a number into a number box, it gets turned into some entirely different number than you entered (sometimes even negative). so that got rid of the possibility of having a number box keep track of the world population for a littel global warming patch. (i suppose i could have used some multiplier later in the sequence and used a decimal..but that doesnt really solve the problem).

for the 2nd excercise, I just allowed the color channels to be played with a bit. I used some switch objects so that you can, for example, take the stream from the red channel and have it display as the blue channel. I also added some formulas in patcher objects like in tutorial #2, which change the output levels of each color channel independently. I was thinking about having these also update in real time like the movie itself, but found that when I put a metro on them MAX got reallly bogged down. maybe thats why Doug was talking about using YUV color in his video project.
for my OpenGL exercise I made a little drawing tool of sorts. You can draw little line segments around the screen in 3 dimensions (arrow keys move cardinal directions, and x and z move “in” and “out” of the screen). I used a combination of key, keyup, metro, and delay to incorporate a delayed key-repeat function so you can draw by holding down the keys. You can also change the color of the line by using the q (black), w (red), e (green), and r (blue) keys. The 1-6 number keys change the line thickness from 1 to 11. If you click in the center of the screen where the line starts, the handle tool is on so you can rotate the screen in 3 dimensions to view your line drawing. The space bar resets the view to default. The \ key switches between orthographic and perspective projection (with the default set to orthographic). And lastly, the backspace/delete key erases the drawing and moves the cursor back to the center of the screen.

This project is based around the idea of proximity sensitive speakers. A small number of unassuming pillars (maybe 8-10 and approx. 4-5 feet tall) will be scattered about the installation space. The pillars will also all be “whispering” out loud via the speakers hidden inside them. However, when you get close to any one pillar to maybe hear what it’s whispering, the pillar becomes silent until you move away again.
Other aspects would make the piece even more interesting/interactive. Some pillars might start talking and then begin to whisper again when approached. Others, when being silenced by a viewer for too long, might shout out. If a viewer were to talk in the “presence” of a pillar, the pillar might “shhh” the user. A lound noise in the installation space might also temporarily quiet all the pillars.
A good deal of the project would involve manipulating various sound clips via MSP, not only in a random/unpredictable way, but also making sure each pillar adheres to the “rules” decided upon as far as behavior relative to proximity. Pillars would need to be constructed and speakers/microphones would need to be installed.
The other big challenge is the proximity sensing. Infrared proximity sensors are relatively inexpensive, but can only sense in one direction. If 4 sensors were used per pillar to sense the 4 cardinal directions, that quickly multiplies the number of required inputs to near 40 just for the proximity sensing. Another option might be embedding pressure sensors in the floor, which would be much more expensive and likely harder to use, but require much less overhead as far as the number of inputs and processer use.
