Well, this one wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be. The image I chose to vectorize was a lot simpler this time, but it worked really well for the idea I had to script it. Almost the entire key was drawn with the regular flash tools, and I used way to many layers again.. (17 including layers that only served as guides and are hidden). Makes it easier to go back and re-tweak certain things I guess. So the notches are the only part of the key that’s drawn with the script. I have a line drawn for the outline, and the last 2 line segments (which close the shape) are drawn the same color as the fill to make them invisible. There’s 23 points on the line, and a total of 9 variables to control their position (a few never move).

edit: I was going to modify the source to smooth the transitions between each set of notches, but then I realized that the lineto() function only allows integer values..so that made it kind of pointless to pursue (not much you can do to smooth a change of 2 pixels if you can move a minimum of 1 pixel at a time). It’s kind of annoying how many of flash’s built-in functions will only accept integers, but it has no problem placing your points/objects at decimal values when you modify things on the canvas.

well, that took a bit longer than I thought it would. decided it would be good practice to trace the entire vector drawing by hand instead of using the convert to vector option in flash after touching it up in photoshop. here’s a side-by-side of the raster and vector versions

edit: so maybe I went a little overboard, but I used a total of 14 layers in flash (just about every color has its own layer). The original jpeg is 58k, and the flash file is 11k.

KÃ”NTAKT seems like an interesting interactive project. Four sensors are installed along a stairway too far apart for one person to reach. The project seems to use humans to conduct electricity, so as people touch each other to make a chain, they are able to connect more of the contact points. Depending on which contact points are connected, the audio and video being projected changes. This creates a unique experience for the viewer, because if they are viewing the piece alone, they will need to cooperate with a stranger in order to “use” the piece.

midterm

so for the midterm I decided to be a little ambitious and make an electronic etch-a-sketch type of device. I ordered an LCD panel, some replacement pitch-bend wheels for a roland keyboard, and got a few switches and have everything wired through a Teleo. The pitch bend wheels control the movment of the cursor, and the 6-position rotary switches allow the color and line weight to be changed. There will also be a switch added to allow the drawing to be turned off temporarily so that the cursor can be moved to a different part of the screen (the cursor position will be represented by a blinking dot). there’s a few more hardware extras I should be able to implement over the weekend, but the MAX patch part is pretty much complete except for adding the new teleo objects.

edit: parents left so I have a little more time to type now. The patch should be complete now. the only feature not directly implemented is drawing with the accelerometer, but since I can use the same method as drawing with the pitch-bend wheels (just adjusting it to use a different set of input values), adding support will be trivial if I get a switch I can use (need a triple-pole, double-throw to implement it at this point with the multi-input-output teleo..which is apparently something radioshack doesn’t stock). Since I haven’t been able to find a time when both me and the wood shop have been free, I’m hoping that monday I’ll be able to cut out all the slots and holes I need for the plastic panel that will hold the lcd screen and the pitch bend wheels and knobs…right now everything works but its just hanging loose. below is a picture that shows the screen and the pitch bend wheels and the rotary switches.

Luke Dubois came today and showed some neat things you could do with max/msp and jitter. I liked how he spent some time explaining MSP objects since we haven’t gone over those in class yet and I’m kinda interested in the audio side of the program. it was also pretty interesting to see how he linked msp and jitter objects together.
